French supporters cheered on West Ham’s win in the Europa Conference League semi final last night, as their country could have lost a Champions League qualifying spot to the Netherlands if AZ Alkmaar had won the tournament.
The Hammers booked their place in the final after a win against AZ Alkmaar 3-1 on aggregate win over Gent and are now just one match away from lifting the European trophy and booking a third year running in a European competition.
French newspaper L’Equipe took up the Hammers allegiance before the two legs, leading with the newspaper headline ‘Come on West Ham’.
The Hammers are hoping to lift their first major trophy since they lifted the 1980 FA Cup; they were one of three winners of the 1999 Intertoto Cup.
West Ham’s last European final had been in the 1975-76 Cup Winners’ Cup when they lost 4-2 to Anderlecht.
In 1965, they won the European Cup Winners Cup
