Some West Ham supporters on social media are calling on David Moyes to sign Dimitri Payet on a free transfer this summer.
The romantic view is that even at 36 years of age, his free kicks alone is worth his wages.
Payet joined West Ham from Marseille in 2015 before returning in the January of the 2016/17 season in ruthless fashion. Then Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was forced to admit during a press conference that Payet wanted to return to the South of France and refused to play, seeing him re-join for £ 25 million.
After 326 games across two different spells for Marseille, Payet was left in tears as he revealed to the press this week that he would be leaving the Stade Velodrome as a free agent.
Despite Payet’s deal expiring in 2024, club officials decided to terminate his deal a year earlier to his disappointment.
In reality, Payet only scored three free kicks in the Premier League for West Ham with a further 5 for Marseille in France.
Some of the same fans calling for a return of Payet have turned their nose up at James Ward Prowse.
He has scored 17 goals from free kicks in the Premier League, second only to David Beckham, who has 18 in all-time records.
He has scored 22 goals from Free kicks in all whole career.
