How AFCON will affect West Ham

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is scheduled to take place between 13 January – 11 February 2024 with players released a week early to join their training camps.

For West Ham this is likely to impact four Hammers

Algeria – Said Benrahma

Mohammed Kudus

Ivory Coast – Maxwel Cornet

Morocco – Nayef Aguerd

Potential games missed by those 4 players Sheffield Utd – away Bournemouth – home Man Utd – away Arsenal – home and FA Cup fourth round games which are scheduled to be played between 27th and 30th January.

What impact these players missing will have is subjective as Cornet doesn’t play in the Premier League of late, Benrhama is not a regular starter and often comes off the bench, Kudus is new and get to prove himself in the Premier League and hold down a regular start and Aguerd drop in form means he could be replaced by Mavropanos by next year.

The transfer window will be open again before the AFCON starts so loans and permanent signings could be an option and we could even see one or two of the African nation international leave.
