The construction giant is acting as project manager in an effort to slash energy bills at the arena that hosted athletic events during the 2012 Olympics.

Mace drew up a business case for the scheme after analysing the environmental benefits, economic viability and logistical feasibility.

A lightweight membrane measuring up to 7,000 square metres will be placed over the stadium roof to generate more than 1 million kWh of renewable energy per year.

The project could save up to 270 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, cutting bills by a potential £350,000 per year, according to Mace.
