The Big Summer Rebuild – Part Two

Following on from part one, where we looked at the quality, age and contract position of the players in our squad, we now look at how the squad will likely look after outgoings and before incomings.

It would be best to read part one before continuing, if you haven’t done so already, then you can do so HERE.

So, below are the likely outgoings from the squad this summer, and a couple of suggestions. I’ve not included Phillips as I can see nothing to indicate that he will be with us beyond the summer yet.

Out Of Contract

Divin Mubama
Ben Johnson
Aaron Cresswell
Angelo Ogbonna*
Joseph Anang

Likely Sales

Said Benrahma £15m
Tilo Kehrer £10m
Lucas Paqueta £85m
Nayef Aguerd £25m
Flynn Downes £10m
Maxwell Cornet £10m

Should Sell

Michael Antonio £2-5m
Danny Ings £2-5m

Kurt Zouma*

It seems crazy that we could be losing up to 10-12 players from the current squad, but we’re cutting it fine with Johnson and Mubama. Cresswell and Anang may well be saying goodbye when their contracts expire, although rumours are that Ogbonna may be offered a new contract.

Sales wise, we have no say in Paqueta if a bid comes in that matches the buy out clause and the same goes for Benrahma and Kehrer who we understand have options to buy in their loans. Aguerd seems intent on leaving and I can’t see Cornet wanting to stay. I can see Downes staying at Southampton, where he is appreciated, unless we have a manager change.

Another year older, I’d really like to see either Antonio or Ings moved on. Ideally, that would be the same for Zouma, who is increasingly looking broken, but I suspect he will be kept until his contract expires at the end of next season.

So, humour me a little with the outgoings, in my scenario our squad would look like the below, without any incomings.

I know this is very much based on theory, but I do think it’s interesting to go through the motions. Of course, some of the sales and contract renewals will not transpire as I have suggested above.

This is now the time to integrate some of our promising youth players into the first team squad as trusted back ups. Teenagers are being introduced at other Premier League clubs that have claimed regular first team places, with Mainoo even starring for England recently. However, some of our hugely talented Youth Cup winning team are idling away on loan in lower divisions and not even getting game time.

I am no youth team expert, so perhaps I am not picking the best of our young talent, but it seems to me that we have a great opportunity to integrate Callum Marshall, Gideon Kodua and either Freddie Potts or George Earthy this summer. Potts will be 21 by the end of the year and the other three will be 20. I know I previously mentioned needing a back up left back, but I would also be willing to take the risk on Ollie Scarles from what I have seen of him. He is a year younger than some of the others and turns 19 before the end of the year.

So, with youth additions our squad would now look like the below before incomings.

So, as touched on in part one, that leaves us needing 8 players in the summer, or 7 if we use Scarles as back up left back. The third and final part of this series will look at some of the players that we could bring in to fill these positions.

  1. I just like to say as long as moyes is gone the youth might get more of a chance to get some game time
